A thermally insulated packaging system is provided for transporting temperature sensitive products, such as medicines, vaccines and laboratory samples. The system comprises an outer shell with an opening and one or more thermally insulated walls having both internal and external impermeable layers, which surround the thermally sensitive product. Adjacent thereto is disposed a refrigerant element having walls which constitute a fluid-impermeable barrier. The refrigerant element comprises a container arranged in a compact flat condition for transport and storage.
