CMS Ref.: 370098-2820 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method for decontamination of a soil, sediment, or sludge containing an halogenated organic compound, comprising the steps of introducing contaminated soil, sediment, or sludge into a separation zone and processing said contaminated material therein to remove a fluid stream substantially free of solids and containing halogenated organic compound; decomposing halogenated compound in said fluid stream in the presence of a chemical decomposition reagent in a reaction zone and whereby forming a reaction effluent stream containing one or more decomposition reaction product; recycling a portion of the said reaction effluent stream containing said decomposition reaction product to said separation zone; and removing soil containing a decomposition reaction product from said separation zone.
