Systems and methods for thermal sensing and imaging using the electro-optic effect. A thermal detection system comprises a temperature sensing element that includes an electro-optic (EO) material layer having a length axis and characterized by a temperature dependent index of refraction, an electrical mechanism for inducing a change in the index of refraction, a laser beam propagating lengthwise through EO layer for probing the refraction index change, and a light intensity meter for measuring a laser beam intensity change caused by the temperature dependent refraction index change. Thermal imaging is obtained by using a pixel array of such thermal sensing elements. The intensity reading may be done in either a cross-polarizer or a Mach Zehnder Interferometry reading configuration.
L'invention concerne des systèmes et des procédés de détection et d'imagerie thermiques reposant sur l'effet électro-optique. Le système de détection thermique comprend un élément de mesure de température pourvu d'une couche de matériau électro-optique (EO) présentant un axe de longueur et caractérisé par un indice de réfraction dépendant de la température; un système électrique pour provoquer un changement dans l'indice de réfraction; un faisceau laser qui se propage le long de la couche de matériau EO pour détecter le changement dans l'indice de réfraction; et enfin, un appareil de mesure de l'intensité lumineuse pour mesurer le changement de l'intensité du faisceau laser causé par le changement de l'indice de réfraction dépendant de la température. L'imagerie thermique est exécutée au moyen d'un réseau de pixels de ces éléments de détection thermique. La lecture de l'intensité peut être réalisée au moyen d'une configuration de lecture à polariseur croisé ou à interféromètre de Mach-Zehnder.
