ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An ink jet printer utilizing a film having a plurality of ink filled holes passing in front of a thermal head having thermal heating elements which may be energized to spout or eject ink onto a record medium. By appropriate film and record medium motion coupled with selective energization of thermal elements in a variety of configurations, both line and serial printing may be achieved. Coloured inks may be com- bined to provide full colour reproduction. The film may be an endless sheet carried on rollers and inked in an ink tank, or a reciprocating sheet passing in front of the thermal head. The use of sponge rollers for ink- ing the film is also taught.
