Abstract of the Disclosure Thermal Insulation Jacket In one arrangement a water heater construction includes a generally cylindrical inner tank (21) surrounded by a layer of insulation (22). The third component is an outer shell (23) which is configured as a hinged combination of two halves (23a, 23b) or flexible skin (65) which can be opened radially so that the outer shell may be placed around the layer of insulation and inner tank and closed to compress the insulation without requiring any relative axial movement between the outer shell and the inner tank. In an alternate arrangement a thermal insulating jacket (205) includes a flexible outer covering (208) bonded to an alternating series of insulation strips (206, 207). The insulation strips include a first plurality (206) of flexible material and a second plurality (207) of rigid material. These strips are arranged in alternating sequence and the combination is sufficiently flexible and formable so as to be wrapped into a generally cylindrical shape.
