The present invention provides a method and apparatus for thermally protecting an electromagnetic actuator (10) used to suppress vibrations in an elevator installation. The apparatus includes a temperature evaluation unit (24) that determines an actual temperature (T n) of the actuator (10) on the basis of a signal (I plim, F plim) proportional to a current (I plim) supplied to the actuator (10), and further includes a limiter (25) which restricts the current (I plim) supplied to the actuator (10) if the actual temperature (T n) of the actuator (10) as determined by the temperature evaluation unit (24) is greater than a predetermined temperature (T nL).
