A thin-film intumescent composition (17) for protecting a substrate (15) against fire and thermal extremes includes a polymer binder, a solvent, a carbonific, a spumific, a catalyst, and at least some additives chosen from a source of carbon, finely divided elemental boron, a metal stearate adduct with alumina, and a conjugated fatty acid, preferably a conjugated triglyceride. The compositions provide chars (23, 25) having greatly increased efficiency, greater thickness, better physical characteristics including cell structure and physical toughness, and greater resistance to oxidation by fires and by chemicals present in fires.
Une composition (17) intumescente à couche mince, destinée à protéger un substrat (15) contre le feu et les températures extrêmes, comprend un liant polymère, un solvant, une substance produisant du carbone, une substance produisant une mousse, un catalyseur, et au moins quelques additifs choisis parmi une source de carbone, du bore élémentaire finement broyé, un produit d'addition contenant un stéarate métallique et de l'alumine, et un acide gras conjugué, un triglycéride conjugué de préférence. De telles compositions donnent des surfaces carbonisées (23, 25) qui présentent une bien meilleure efficacité, une épaisseur supérieure, de meilleures caractéristiques physiques y compris leur structure cellulaire et leur dureté physique, ainsi qu'une plus grande résistance à l'oxydation par les incendies et par les produits chimiques présents dans les feux.
