ABSTRACT Mullite articles useful under conditions of high thermal stress, such as are encountered by diesel particulate traps, hot gas filters and catalytic substrates for combustion, are manufactured by the reaction of aluminum fluoride and silica. These reactants which are formed into a desired shape with a binder, are heated to produce shock and creep resistent articles composed of mullite whiskers.
