In a thermal spray apparatus (1) a plasma stream passes through a nozzle (2) towards a substrate (20). On entering the nozzle (2), the plasma stream passes through a plasma cooling passageway (10), to a plasma accelerating zone (11) defined by a narrowed passageway, and then into an expanded plasma/particle confining zone (12, 18) for the discharge of material from the nozzle (2). To apply thermal spray coatings (21) of increased hardness to a substrate (20), the ratio of length of the plasma/particle confining zone (12, 18) relative to the diameter of the plasma/particle confining zone (12, 18) is increased from the more conventional value to about 5:1, preferably to a ratio in the range of from 7:1 to 16.5:1. Ratios of from 10:1 to 13:1 have been found to achieve a particularly desirable result. Also the method and the coatings obtained.

Dans un appareil de pulvérisation thermique (1), un flux de plasma passe par une buse (2) et arrive à un substrat (20). A l'entréee de la buse (2), le flux de plasma passe par un passage (10) de refroidissement du plasma, pour arriver à un passage étroit (11) d'accélération du plasma qui s'élargit pour aboutir à une zone de confinement (12, 18) du pasma et des particules, d'où les particules sont projetées hors de l'appareil. Pour obtenir des revêtements (21) plus durs sur un substrat (20) par ce procédé, le rapport de la longueur sur le diamètre de la zone de confinement (12, 18) du plasma et des particules est plus élevé que le rapport 5:1 usuel et se trouve, de préférence, dans la plage allant de 7:1 à 16,5:1. Des rapports dans la plage 10:1 à 13:1 permettent d'obtenir des résultats particulièrement bons. L'invention concerne, également, les procédés d'utilisation de l'appareil et les revêtements obtenus.
