ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A thermal transfer printer comprises a thermal printing head for generating heat corresponding to an image signal. A platen roller opposite the thermal head and co-operates therewith during heat transfer to effect contact between sheet-like material to which ink is to be transferred and transfer material. The platen roller has a circumference less than the length of the sheet-like material whereby only a portion of said sheet-like material is wrapped around the platen roller at any on time. Timing belts that travel at a speed substantially equal to the peripheral speed of the platen roller for ensure correct alignment of the sheet-like material with the platen roller during heat transfer. A clamp clamps the sheet-like material to the timing belts.
