91R052 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A surface having an array of cavities 8 each having an individually controlled heater 18 can be used for a variety of purposes. Sensors for detecting the positions of objects, temperatures and pressures feed information to a controller for activating heaters. The heaters heat a medium which expands and sends pressure pulses from the cavities. The pressure pulses can be used to exert a force on adjacent objects for making bearings, motors and deformable mirrors. The pressure pulses can be used in hydrodynamic bodies to influence fluid flows and can be controlled as a phased array pressure wave transmitting or receiving antenna. 0059S
