2101163 9213684 PCTABS00014 A device for shaving hair (10) has a housing (16) which is formed with a handle (20) and which supports a razor blade (46) and a heating means. More specifically, the heating means, which may be either a linearly-scanned laser beam (60) or a ceramic or metallic heating element (15), is mounted in the housing (16) to pre-heat the hair to be cut. Accordingly, the heating means softens the hair that is near the cutting edge (48) of the blade (46), so that a blade (46) which is less sharp than conventional blades may be used to cut the hair without unduly irritating the skin. Appropriate power supplies for the heating means may be contained within the housing (16), if desired.
