This invention relates to ruthenium initiators for the ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) of cyclic olefins that are inactive at room temperature but activatable at elevated temperature (referred to as ("thermally switchable"). In general, these are compounds of ruthenium metal to which are bonded four or five ligands, in which one ligand is a pyridine ring in which the nitrogen is chelated to the ruthenium, or a five or six membered ring incorporating nitrogen and the ruthenium in which the nitrogen is chelated to the ruthenium.

L'invention porte sur des amorceurs à base de ruthénium pour la polymérisation par métathèse avec ouverture de cycle (ROMP) d'oléfines cycliques, qui sont inactifs à température ambiante et ne peuvent être activés à une température élevée (appelés « amorceurs commutables thermiquement »). En général, ce sont des composés du ruthénium métallique auxquels sont liés quatre ou cinq ligands, l'un des ligands étant un noyau pyridine dans lequel l'azote est chélaté au ruthénium, ou un noyau à cinq ou six chaînons renfermant de l'azote et du ruthénium, l'azote étant chélaté au ruthénium.
