ABSTRACT THERMOFORMING MACHINE In the thermoforming of a sheet of thermoplastic material opposed successions of tooling steps each carry- ing an array of forming tools are driven in the same forward direction and in converging and then parallel paths. A sheet of the heat softened thermoplastic material is fed between the forming tools adjacent the start of the convergence of the paths. The relative approach and forward movement of the tooling steps is controlled to bring the opposed forming tools into contact with the sheet and progressively form the sheet by counterthrust between the opposed tools. The sheet is drawn between the converging and parallel paths of the tooling steps and simultaneously is formed in accordance with the configuration of the forming tools. The formed sheet is maintained at a sufficiently high temperature, at least within the converging paths of the tooling steps, to permit any defects in the shape of the formed sheet that result from the stepwise action of the successive tooling steps to be removed by dispersion of tensions in the sheet before it cools below its softening temperature.
