ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE This invention provides a process for preparing 2-(3-aryl-5-isoxazolyl)-benzoic acid having the formula Image wherein X and Y are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, halogen, lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, halo-lower-alkyl, phenoxyphenyl and cyano which comprises heating 3'-(aryl)spiro[isobenzofuran-1(3H),5'(4'H)-isoxazol] 3-one having the formula Image at a temperature ranging from 30°C. to the reflux temperature of the solution. The compounds obtained are effective as plant growth regulants. The process of the present inven- tion overcomes disadvantages associated with prior art processes which involve the conversion of isoxazolin-5-yl benzoate with N-bromosuccinimide or dichlorodicyanobenzo- quinone since isoxazolin-5-yl benzoates are prepared from vinyl benzoates which are difficult to prepare.
