ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: Tough crystalline thermoplastic aromatic poly- etherketones containing the repeat units Image alone or in conjunction with other repeat units especially Image or Image and having an inherent viscosity IV of at least 0.7, preferably at least 0.8. The polymers may be made by condensation of hydroquinone, 4,4'- dlfluorobenzophenone and an alkali metal carbonate or bicarbonate in the presence of an aromatic sulphone solvent, e.g. diphenyl- sulphone, at 150-400°C. The polymers are very useful for wire coating. The most relevant prior art techniques for making polyetherketones produce low molecular weight polymer when applied to this system.
