A composite with a thermoplastic matrix and fiber reinforcement (12) is made by rotation of an exit die (22) about a roving of continuous fiber (12) in the presence of a thermoplastic melt. The rotation causes opposing inner and outer helical flow conditions which reduce the melt viscosity of the polymer by shear thinning while dragging and directing the polymer into the fiber roving thereby wetting and dispersing the fiber. A composite structure is formed with a polymer rich skin (41) and a core region (42) of unidirectionally aligned polymer and fiber (12). The polymeric skin (41) is composed of helically aligned polymer chains which are coiled by the rotation around the core to compress the core region (42) and enhance fiber wet out.

L'invention concerne un matériau composite à matrice thermoplastique et fibres de renfort (12), obtenu par rotation d'une filière de sortie (22) autour d'une mèche discontinue de fibre (12), en présence d'une matière thermoplastique fondue. La rotation induit des conditions d'écoulement hélicoïdales intérieures et extérieures opposées qui réduisent la viscosité de la matière fondue polymère par fluidification lorsque ce polymère est entraîné dans la mèche de fibre pour imprégner et disperser cette dernière. Une structure composite est formée d'une peau riche en polymère (41) et d'une âme (42) de polymère et de fibre (12) alignés unidirectionnellement. La peau polymère (41) est composée de chaînes de polymère alignées de manière hélicoïdale enroulées par la rotation autour de l'âme pour comprimer l'âme (42) et améliorer l'imprégnation de la fibre.
