ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: The invention is concerned with an electrolytic cell comprising an anode, a cathode and a diaphragm therebetween, wherein the diaphragm comprises discrete fibers of a self- bonding thermoplastic material; the fibers have a diameter of between 0.05 and 40 microns. The diaphragm used in the cells of the invention exhibits low electrical resistance and high resistance to chemical degradation.
