THERMOSETTING PHENOL-FORMALDEHYDE RESINS, MANUFACTURE AND USES THEREOF ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Thermosetting phenol-formaldehyde resins useful as adhesives are produced by a novel procedure involving reaction of the phenol and formaldehyde in an aqueous system containing a metal carboxylate catalyst, in which a single step is used wholly at a temperature above about 90°C up to the reflux temp- erature of the system. The total reactant concentration is preferably from about 52 to 56%, which also achieves excellent phase separation of resin from the aqueous medium. Preferably the mole ratio of formaldehyde to phenol is above 1.7:1.
