A thermostatic valve has a valve housing (1) and a thermostat top part (2) with a base foot (7). The latter is surrounded by a rotatable retaining ring (11) and can be pushed onto the valve housing (1) until it engages an abutment face (14) of the valve housing (1). The valve housing (1) has a tapering clamping face (16). In the retaining ring (11), at least one clamping element (17) can be pressed against the clamping face (11) in order to press the thermostat top part (2) against the abutment face (14). In order to compensate for thermally-induced material deformations, and to prevent damage to the clamping face (16), the retaining ring (11) has a guide face (19), the spacing of which from the centre line (18) of the retaining ring (11) increases from one end of the guide face (19) to the other. The clamping element (17) bearing against the guide face (19) is adjustable through rotation of the retaining ring (11). The retaining ring is rotatable against spring force for the purpose of pulling back the clamping element (17), and, as the base foot (7) is pushed onto the valve housing (1), a locking ring (30) is arranged to be displaced axially against spring force from a locking position, in which the clamping element (17) bears against the locking ring circumference, into a releasing position, beyond the path of movement of the clamping element (17).
