ABSTRACT Sheet molding compounds are thickened (or maturated) via "in situ" formation of polyureas made from aromatic primary diamines with reduced basicity and diisocyanates. The molding compounds, which can option- ally contain mineral fillers such as chopped glass fiber, are generally based upon unsaturated polyester resins having a high percentage of hydroxyl end groups, polymer- izable vinyl compounds such as styrene, and the like. The thickened compositions are tack-free and compression moldable after less than one day, typically after less than several hours, into permanently shaped, strong rigid articles, such as automotive body parts. A viscosity plateau is reached and maintained by the maturated com- pounds of the present invention for extended periods of time, e.g., several weeks.
