A passenger detection system (400) is provided. The passenger (Fig. 6) detection system (400) utilizes an oscillation circuit (10) that causes an antenna electrode (E1) to emit an electric field that is disrupted by the electrical characteristics of an object (OB) placed on the seat (1). This disruption alters the current and phase of the signal in the antenna electrode (E1). By comparing the current flowing in the antenna electrode (E1) and/or the difference between the phase of the signal in the antenna electrode (E1) and the oscillation circuit output signal with predetermined threshold values, it is possible to detect the presence of a passenger in a reliable and inexpensive manner. The determination is made with a two layer electrode arrangement, including smaller and larger electrodes (E1 through E4). The two layers allow calculation of an amount of compression on the seat (1). The amount of compression is used to characterize the passenger.
L'invention porte sur un système (400) de détection des occupants d'un véhicule comportant un circuit oscillant (10) faisant émettre à une antenne électrode (E1) un champ électrique que perturbent les caractéristiques d'un objet posé sur un siège (1). La perturbation modifie l'intensité et la phase du signal de l'antenne (E1). En comparant à des valeurs seuils prédéterminées le courant circulant dans l'antenne E1 et/ou la différence entre la phase du signal de l'antenne E1 et celle du signal du circuit oscillant, on peut détecter la présence d'un occupant de manière sûre et peu onéreuse. La détermination se fait à l'aide d'un dispositif d'électrodes (petites et grandes) (E1 à E4) à deux couches, lesdites couches permettant de calculer la force de compression s'exerçant sur le siège (1) laquelle sert à caractériser le passager.
