Thienodiazepine compounds of the formula (I) Image ( I) wherein R3 is a group of the formula selected from the formulas Image - (1) - (CH2)a N(R4)COR7 (2) - (CH2)a N(R8)SO2R9 (3) - (CH2)a N(R8)COOR10 (4) - (CH2)a OCON(R11)(R12) (5) - (CH2)a CON(R13)(R14) (6) - (CH2)a OCOR15 (7) - (CH2)a OSO2R16 (8) - (CH2)a COR17 (9) and - (CH2)a S(O)nR18 (10) wherein a is 0 or an integer of 1 to 6, Z is an oxygen atom or a sulfur atom, X is an oxygen atom or a sulfur atom, or X and Y may combinedly form a group of the formula: = N - N = C (R20) - or = N - C H = C (R20)-, salts thereof and pharmaceutical use thereof. The above- mentioned compounds have CCK antagonistic action, gastrin antagonistic action and inhibitory action on cell adhesion, and are useful as pharmaceuticals.
