ABSTRACT Smooth, glossy, thin films based on linear polyethy- lene with Mw> 4 x 105, preferably above 8 x 105, having a strength above 1 GPa, a modulus above 20 GPa, and a FEM value above 150 KJ/m, and having a thickness below 25 µm, preferably below 2 µm, an opacity below 15 % and a water vapour transmission value below 0.6. Such films can be prepared by spinning or ex- truding a semidiluted solution of polyethylene, thermoreversible gelation of the spun or extruded article, followed by high, bi- axial stretching.
