ABSTRACT The specification discloses the addition of a plurality of thin- film transistor circuits to a multilayer display apparatus having a plurality of radiation-emitting elements beneath a transparent outer layer. With very few external leads, the transistor circuits sequentially switch a common brightness control signal to the plurality of individual display elements. This greatly simplifies the external circuitry required to control the brightness of thin display panels, Furthermore, the thin panel can be manufactured in large dimensions required for television and billboards without having the disadvan- tage of a bulky cathode ray tube.
