ABSTRACT A vacuum tube video display screen and imaging device utilizing waveguides to disperse a horizontal line of image over the vertical area of the viewing screen and an array of closely spaced liquid crystal lines to permit passage of light from the dispersed image through to a phosphor coating. By deactivating lines of liquid crystal in a sequence corresponding to the sequence of image lines scanned along the optical waveguides a complete picture is formed on the viewing screen. In a further embodiment an optical waveguide sheet disperses a single pixel of image over the entire viewing screen, and orthogonal arrays of closely spaced liquid crystal lines are sequentially activated to permit passage of light to the corresponding pixel on the viewing screen. An imaging device utilizes orthogonal arrays of closely spaced liquid crystal lines extending across the image plane to permit passage of a single pixel of light to a photoemissive material co-operating with an anode, which produces an electronic signal corresponding to the intensity of light in each pixel.
