ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A novel compound, diacetoxythiophene, of the formula: Image is disclosed, wherein each R is CH3CO-. This compound may be prepared by reacting 4-chloro-4-chloromethyloxetan-2- one with hydrogen sulfide in the presence of an amine and the reaction solution is reacted with ketene. The novel product is useful as an intermediate in the production of thiotetronic acid.
