Pour purifier un thiophène contenant des mercaptans, on oxyde ces derniers en polysulfures et sépare le thiophène par distillation. L'oxydation des mercaptans par le soufre est de préférence effectué à l'aide d'un catalyseur basique. La réaction est rapide et pratiquement complète, et permet de former des polysulfures lourds aisément séparables par distillation du thiophène.
