The thoracentesis device (10) includes a handle, an outer needle (30) having a longitudinal conduit (34) in fluid communication with a cavity (50) defined inside the handle (11). A spring loaded inner needle (28) is slide disposed inside the conduit (34) with the proximal portion of the inner needle (28) operably engaged with a large spring (22) that imparts a sufficient distal spring force to fully extend the blunt tip end (32) of the inner needle (28) beyond the sharp distal tip (54) of the outer needle (30).
