Abstract A threaded fastener which can be installed by radial expansion into threaded engagement with a workpiece having an initially unthreaded aperture, for securing an apertured member or members to the workpiece, and which after installation can be removed in the manner of a screw or bolt, has a shank and an enlarged head. A bore for receiving means for expanding the shank extends entirely through the shank and the head. Within the head, the bore is enlarged by a counterbore. At least part of the shank intermediate between its ends has an external screw thread having a sharp crest which on expansion can embed in the workpiece, and an end portrion of the shank remote from the head is unthreaded and has an external diameter smaller than that of the screw-threaded part. The fastener is installed in an aperture in the workpiece by pulling a tapered mandrel along the bore to expand the shank and cause the screw thread to embed in the workpiece, and the head may then be deformed so as to clamp another member to the workpiece. The mandrel may have a key-forming head of non-circular cross-section whereby the bore can be adapted to receive in keying engagement a tool of suitable shape for turning the fastener.
