In a three-dimensional color television system, a three-dimensional effect is usually created by processing a pair of stereoscopic images. In the current invention only one focussed image is used. The three-dimensional effect is achieved by recording the various focal lengths of rays from the original picture elements after the rays have passed through the optical lens of the camera. Within an evacuated tube, a thin photo- sensitive dielectric plate is mechanically reciprocated through the range of focal depths in the image on which the focussed illuminated picture elements generate electric charges which are then sequentially scanned and recorded electronically. At the television receiving set, a dielectric plate coated with fine fluorescent elements adapted to fluoresce in the primary colors is mechanically reciprocated in synchronization with the sequence of picture elements transmitted electronically from the camera. The range of focal depths in the image is then expanded to recreate the original three-dimensional scene by a picture tube fitted with an optical lens or fresnel lens.
