An etalon is used in a new manner wherein two output signals from two opposing etalon end faces are provided to a combiner where the two signals are allowed to interfere with each other to produce one or more filtered output beams of light. Preferably the phase relationship between the two etalon output signals is varied to offset a phase shift that occurs when the signals are combined.
