The invention is directed to antimicrobial peptides related to naturally- occurring protegrin peptides, and methods of using the peptides in a variety of contexts, including the treatment or prevention of infections, and diseases related thereto. The peptides exhibit decreased hemolytic activity against human red blood cells as compared with native PG-1 and melittin.
