THRUST BEARING AND SEAL ASSEMBLY Abstract Accelerated wear of the seal surface in a thrust bearing and seal assembly is avoided by the provision of a bearing 42 having a thrust bearing pad 60 engaging a shoulder 20 on a shaft 10 with the inner diameter 40 of the bearing 42 being spaced from the shaft 10 sufficiently to define a seal receiving space 44. An axially movable seal 46 having a sealing surface 48 engaging the shoulder 20 is located in the space 44 and is biased against the shoulder 20 by a biasing spring 58. When deflection occurs, the sealing element 46 is free to yield axially, allowing the loading to be taken up by the thrust pad 60.
