During playing of a game having a switch which can be tilted to provide directional control, the thumb of the user contacting the switch is covered by a protective device in the form of a sleeve with a closed end covering the tip of the thumb. The layer is smooth so that it has a constant thickness without frictional ribs and the like with the thickness being of the order of 0.30 inch and this has been found to allow accurate control of the directional switch while reducing the shearing action on the skin of the thumb of the player to avoid soreness.
