Case 2799 THYRISTOR TAP CHANGER ARRANGEMENT ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A transformer tap changing apparatus for arcless tap changing uses thyristors as the main switching means. The apparatus has a number of taps on the secondary winding of a transformer. Two branch circuits, each having a movable contact at one end connect the same tap or adjacent taps to a load. Each branch includes series connection of a reactor and oppositely poled, parallel connected thyristors which control current flow through the respective branch. The apparatus does not require an interrupter switch connected between the branch circuits. When one of the movable contacts is to be moved to raise or lower the voltage, the thyristors in the branch circuit having the movable contact have the gating voltage removed and they stop conducting at the next current zero. The movable contact can then be changed to another tap with no arcing, and then the gating voltage is re-applied to the gate electrodes.
