A process for synthesizing TiC composite materials containing a fine dispersion of TiC crystals in a metallic matrix. The matrix may contain one or more of metals selected from A1, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mo, Ni and Ti. The process comprises rapid heating of a mixture of titanium alloys with carbon, preferably by arc melting or thermal spraying. This rapid heating step is also effective when the starting materials contain titanium, other metals and carbon.

Procédé de synthèse de matériaux composites de carbure de titane contenant des cristaux de carbure de titane finement dispersés dans une matrice métallique. La matrice peut contenir un ou plusieurs des métaux qui suivent : Al, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mo, Ni et Ti. Le procédé consiste à réchauffer rapidement un mélange d'alliages de titane avec du carbone, de préférence au moyen de la fusion à arc ou de la métallisation à chaud. Cette étape de chauffage rapide est également efficace lorsque les matériaux de départ renferment du titane, d'autres métaux et du carbone.
