A ticket dispenser comprises a housing including a body defining an internal chamber for receiving a roll of paper web and a lid for the body. The lid is moveable between a closed position and an open position to expose the internal chamber and has an upper ticket receiving surface to receive tickets ejected from the housing via an opening therein. A paper web guide directs a paper web unwound from a roll in the internal chamber along a generally vertical path towards the opening. The paper web guide includes a substantially upright wall portion with an upper edge and a passive retainer mechanism acting on the paper web so as to retain against the upright wall portion, any part of the paper web advanced along the path. A drive is actuable to unwind the paper web from the roll and advance the paper web along the path. A cutting mechanism cuts the paper web into discrete tickets and a deflector is orientated so as to deflect toward the ticket receiving surface, each discrete ticket as it is ejected from the housing via the opening as a result of advancement of the paper web along the path. The upright wall portion extends substantially from the cutting mechanism to the opening.
