ABSTRACT The invention provides for a floating island for producing power from tides. The floating island is comprised of a column fixed to the ocean bed, and a float interconnected to the column. The up and down motion of the float relative to the column, in response to tide motion is translated into power by force linking means, and electrical generating means convert this power into useful electricity. Suitable force linking means may be comprised of pulley gear mechanisms, helical drive mechanisms, rack and pinion mechanism, induction mechanisms, and hydraulic mechanisms. The float is interconnected to the column by gimbal mounting means. The gimbal mounting means allow the float to tilt in relation to the wave motion, while still permitting the tide motion to move the float up and down and produce power. The apparatus referred to may be provided as one or a number of units.
