ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A tilt system for a railway car includes an accelerometer which sup- plies electrical signals to a signal processor to derive output signals only when the detected lateral accelerator exceeds a predetermined value, e.g. 0.04g. Depending on the direction of acceleration pressurised and is directed into one or other of the sides of a double acting piston/cylinder actuator in response to the signals from the processor. Movement of the piston rod causes a tilt mechansim of generally known construction to operate in a direction to compen- sate for the lateral acceleration forces.
