Abstract A timber harvesting machine comprises a self-propelled vehicle on which tree processing equipment is mounted. A boom on the vehicle is extensible and retractable to reach out and fell a first tree, convey such first tree to the processing equipment and subsequently return to fell a second tree while the first tree is being processed. The processing equipment has an elongate framework defining a path of travel for a tree. A tree clamp is mounted on the framework at a first end of this path of travel. A bucking shear is mounted on the framework adjacent this first end. A delimbing unit is also mounted on the framework. This unit is driven in reciprocal sliding movements relative to the framework towards and away from the tree clamp along a straight line continuation of the path of travel for performing a delimbing operation on an outward stroke of the delimbing unit with the tree held stationary by the clamp, and for subsequently performing a tree propelling operation on a return stroke of the delimbing unit with the tree now free to travel along the path for subsequent bucking by the shear. The ability of the machine to carry out the operations of felling and processing simultan- eously represents an advantage in terms of cycle time.
