ABSTRACT This inventive idea relates to the application of a modified Wigner distribution as a tool for time-frequency signal analysis. This method enables to evalute the signal structure simultaneously in the frequency domain and in the time domain. Thus the limitations of methods working exclusively in the frequency domain or in the time domain are overcomed. Further, the method enables to evaluate instantaneous transmission of the frequency content between different signals and thus to study the relationship between different systems. Moreover, this approach does not need the assumption about linearity of the process and stationarity of the signal. I have defined the smoothed cross discrete Wigner distribution as well as the the algorithm for the smoothed auto and cross discrete Wigner distribution.
