In an effort to conserve energy with high intensity discharge lighting it is known that dimming the lamp using capacitance dimming has been used effectively for years, however the use of external signaling has been required in order to control the operation of the dimming process. The timer activated, individually operated high-low capacitance HID dimming system uses an on-board microcircuit to control the dimming process independently of any wiring or signaling from external sources. This form of dimming can reduce the power consumption of the lamp and ballast by as much as 50% while it is in the dimming mode while still operating the lamp within its designed parameters. The unit consists of a control module that is installed directly within the luminaire's ballast compartment and a dual section capacitor that replaces the original single section capacitor that was originally supplied with the ballast.
