APPLIANCE TIMER ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An appliance timer including an axially narrow pro- gram wheel or disc mounted for rotation and having a plu- rality of grooves formed in its axially facing surfaces, the grooves being concentric with the wheel's axis. The bottoms of the grooves define the program controlling sur- faces. A plurality of double-pole, single-throw switches are mounted in the appliance timer housing, the distal end of the throw of each of the switches being formed to pro- vide a follower which rides in one of said grooves against its program controlling surface, thereby controlling the switch. The switches in turn control the various appliance cycle portions. In the preferred embodiment, the program wheel is driven from a constant speed motor through an es- capement mechanism. The escapement mechanism includes a cylindrically shaped driving member which is concentric with the program wheel axis. One or more cam lobes pro- viding camming surfaces are formed on the interior cylin- drical wall of the driving member. A ratchet wheel is disposed for rotation on the program wheel drive shaft. A pawl having a ratchet wheel engaging member at one end and a follower at the other end is actuated by the camming surfaces on the driving member to disengage the pawl from the ratchet wheel, to cause the pawl to move a predetermined -1- distance in a first direction, re-engage the ratchet wheel, and then return the same distance in the opposite direction to advance the ratchet wheel, and an output shaft to which the ratchet wheel is drivingly connected, in response to rotation of the driving member.
