ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE TIRE BUILDING MACHINE SERVER An apparatus (10) and method especially adapted for applying and cutting a predetermined length of sidewall (12) in strip form on a transfer roll (14). The strip material (12) is carried by a strip applier assembly (20) which is mounted on a supporting structure (16) for movement of the strip applier assembly (20) toward the transfer roll (14) to carry the strip (12) into position for stitching the end (74) of the strip (12) on the roll (14) so that a predetermined length can be wound on the roll (14). The strip applier assembly (20) has a primary means (64) for moving the assembly (20) away from the transfer roll (14) to clear a knife assembly (48) which is pivotally mounted on the sup- porting structure (16). Tilting of the knife assembly (20) moves an anvil (52) into a cutting position proxi- mate to the strip (12). The strip applier assembly (20) also has a secondary means (70) for moving the assembly (20) away from the knife (54) before the knife (54) is retracted to prevent smearing of the white sidewall (12).
