ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A tire-changing machine has a framework provided for supporting a wheel rim receiving platform adapted to receive and secure thereon a wheel rim having a drop center. A bead breaker mechanism includes an upper bead breaker shoe operatively connected to a bead breaker drive through an upper bead breaker lever which is pivotally mounted on the framework. An upper bead breaker shoe support column is coupled to the upper shoe at an upper end and pivotally connected to the upper bead breaker lever at a lower end. The pivot between the bead breaker lever and the framework is positioned below the pivot between the bead breaker lever and the support column when the upper bead breaker lever is not actuated. An elongate link is pivotally attached to a point intermediate the ends of the support column at one end and the framework at the other end, the attachment between the link and the support column being at or below the pivot between the link and the framework when the upper bead breaker lever is not actuated, whereby downward motion imparted to the support column by actuation of the upper bead breaker lever causes the upper shoe to move inward and downward toward the drop center of a wheel rim on the rim receiving platform.
