2078873 9212631 PCTABS00014 A method for cryopreserving tissues begins with dissected tissues, which are divided into at least two groups having higher and lower levels of microbial contamination. The first group is treated with a first antimicrobial regimen that renders most or all of them substantially free of contamination while maintaining cell viability at a high level. The second group is subjected to a second antimicrobial regimen that minimally reduces cell viability and renders substantially all of the tissues free of microbial contamination. Both the first and second groups are cryopreserved, thereby maximizing yield. Preferably, the second antimicrobial regimen is conducted at 37 ·C, and it utilizes a specific set of antimicrobial agents as described in the specification. Another method for cryopreserving tissues begins with dissected tissues. All the dissected tissues are treated with an antibiotic regimen which renders all of them substantially free of contamination while maintaining cell viability at a high level. Preferably, the regimen is conducted at 37 ·C, utilizing a specific set of antimicrobial agents as described in the specification, and cryopreserved.
