The present invention is directed to improved multi-layer golf ball compositions and the resulting regulation balls produced using these compositions. In this regard, a smaller and lighter core is produced and metal particles, or other heavy weight filler materials, are included in the cover compositions. This results in a molded golf ball exhibiting enhanced interior perimeter weighting. Preferably, the particles are included in a relatively thick inner cover layer (or mantle) of a solid, three-piece multi-layered golf ball. The size and weight of the core is reduced in order to produce an overall golf ball which meets, or is less than, the 1.62 ounce maximum weight limitation specified by the United States Golf Association. It has been found that the combination of the present invention produces a golf ball with an increased moment of inertia and/or a greater radius of gyration and thus generates lower spin. This results in a golf ball exhibiting enhanced distance without substantially effecting the feel and durability characteristics of the ball.
La présente invention vise une composition améliorée pour balles de golf multicouches ainsi que les balles ainsi produites. Les balles sont constituées d'un noyau plus petit et plus léger et d'une enveloppe faite d'une composition à laquelle on a ajouté des particules métalliques ou une autre charge plutôt lourde, ce qui permet d'en augmenter le poids périmétrique. Les particules sont de préférence incorporées dans une couche de revêtement intérieur relativement épaisse (qu'on appelle le manteau) de l'enveloppe multicouche. La grosseur et le poids du noyau sont réduits de manière à permettre la production de balles dont le poids maximal est égal ou inférieur à 1.62 onces, qui est le poids maximal prescrit par la United States Golf Association. Il appert que la combinaison des éléments de la présente invention permet de produire une balle de golf ayant un moment d'inertie accru et/ou un plus grand rayon de giration, ce qui en réduit la vitesse de rotation. Ainsi, cette balle, dont la durabilité et les caractéristiques tactiles sont à peu près inchangées, peut être frappée plus loin.
