A method of forming a safety shoe reinforcement element. The method includes the steps of, first, forming a reinforcement element body out of a sheet of steel, and second, heat-treating the reinforcement element body. Next, the reinforcement element body is quenched, followed by cooling the reinforcement element body to an ambient temperature. Subsequently, the reinforcement element body is electroplated with chromium, to provide a layer of chromium on the body. Finally, a layer of titanium nitride is deposited, by physical vapor deposition, on the chromium layer.
