The invention relates to a novel form of titanium oxide. Said titanium oxide is characterized in that it has a rutile crystallographic structure with an orthorhombic network and a space group Pnmmm; it has a morphology in the form of rectangular platelets which are 3-10 nm long, 3-10 nm wide and less than 1nm thick. It has a specific surface which is determined by adsorption and desoprtion of nitrogen, corresponding to 100 - 200 m2/g. Applications: self-cleaning glazing, photovoltaic cells.
